Grant's Old Mill

Constructed by the famous Metis leader Cuthbert Grant, this mill, located on Sturgeon Creek, was the first of its kind to be built in the western prairies. It marks the first use of hydro power in the area now known as the Province of Manitoba. The mill is located at the corner of Portage Avenue and Booth Drive.

Cuthbert Grant was the son of a Scottish father and a Cree mother. He was born in 1793 at Fort Tremblante, an North-West trading post where his father was the factor. Cuthbert Grant was educated in Scotland and returned to Red River to work for the North-West Company. Cutthbert is best remembered as leader of the Metis at the Battle of Seven Oaks. Following the amalgamation of the HBC & NWC in 1821, he was appointed Warden of the Plains. He also founded a Metis settlement, Grantown, now called St. Francois Xavier.

The mill is open daily 10:00am to 6:00pm June through August.
